Despite Sony’s best efforts to curb the yellow light problem with their new PS3 Slim console we are now receiving many reports of this fault even with the new slim consoles. Gamers can’t believe their luck!

Although the problem seems to be much less of an issue when compared to the failure rate of the older PS3 consoles I’m sure we are going to see quite a few of these slim consoles with the yellow light fault due to the sheer numbers of consoles sold at the new lower price point and better spec (bigger hard drive).

The first reports of the yellow light of death appeared on popular gaming forums in December 2007 and quickly escalated into a full blown crisis for gamers worldwide but particularly in the United Kingdom and United States where the problem hit a all time high in September 2009 when the BBC’s watchdog program high lighted the topic and the problem has been floating around this highly reported level ever since, Sony admitted their was a problem with some of the consoles and stated that 12,500 out of 2.5 million had failed due to the yellow light of death but my personal estimate is probably closer to 500,00 failures or maybe even more that have failed in less than 24 months since purchase.

Many things contribute to a severe failure of the PlayStation 3 with the symptoms often being described as the yellow light of death or YLOD.

If you want to know why your console has died you really should be pointing the finger at the environmental science boffins who decided it would be a really good idea to remove lead from solder (it probably is a good idea in the long run) and so other alternatives to lead had to be found as additives for the solder, then end result is a new lead free solder that doesn’t stick as good as the old lead based solder.
